Young Musician Opportunities
String Play-In
Student musicians can join the LPO orchestra in one performance in the fall and spring. There are no auditions or age restrictions to participate; we ask that all students learn the music to the best of their ability before the first rehearsal and attend the three rehearsals before the concert with the orchestra. Students will sit side-by-side with a member of the orchestra who will support and encourage the student for the experience to be a successful one.
The LPO is a group of musicians from the greater Lowell area who perform orchestral music from a variety of genres. Since its founding in 1903, the LPO’s mission has been to inspire the greater Merrimack Valley with musical performances given throughout the year. Playing alongside the LPO’s seasoned and knowledgeable musicians will provide the students with a phenomenal learning experience, it is also an impressive extracurricular activity to list on college applications and resumes.
Registration for our upcoming string play-in will be available here soon.
Jeanne Selander Memorial Concerto Competition
Each year, the Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra sponsors the Jeanne Selander Memorial Concerto Competition, a competition for young musicians. Students audition for the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the orchestra. The winner receives $500 scholarship and is invited to play with the LPO.
The competition is open to anyone who will be under 18 years of age/still in high school as of May 2026 and resides in MA.
Registration for our upcoming concerto competition will be available in the Fall 2025.
