Joon KYun, cello

 Joon started playing the cello at age 9 at the Seoul Arts Center Gifted and Talented center for young artists. At the age of 12, he moved to Virginia to study at the Levine School of Music and the Peabody Preparatory to study with Daniel Levitov. At Peabody, he received numerous awards including the Jane Ralls Memorial Award, Peabody Performance Award, Cogen String Competition Middle School Division 1st place, 13th Korea Times String Division 1st place. As a part of the Performance Academy at the Peabody Preparatory, he has participated in master classes with Paul Katz, Richard Aaron, Laura Bluestein, Amir Eldan, Pacifica Quartet, Rubens Quartet and many more.

After middle school, he decided to move to a private boarding school, Concord Academy, to pursue his interests in academics as well as the performing arts. He currently studies with Allison Eldredge as a soloist and a chamber musician at the New England Conservatory Preparatory Program. He has received numerous awards for the past 3 years. To list a few: American Protégé Piano and Strings Competition Intermediate Category 1st place, Crescendo International Competition age 16 1st place, Waltham Philharmonic Competition 1st place, Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition Senior division first place award, 5th Roman Totenberg Young Musician’s String Competition senior division 2nd place winner, and 2017 Grand Prize Virtuoso International First Place award. He was also a Finalist at the Boston Symphony Orchestra concerto Competition and the Fidelity Investments Young Artists Competition at the Boston Pops.

He is an arts leader at the Concord Arts Center, a first chair cellist at Concord Academy Chamber Orchestra and Epiphany Catholic Church Orchestra. For past summers, he has attended Peabody Preparatory Summer Camp, Foulger International Music Festival, Indiana University String Academy, Bowdoin International Festival, and he is planning to attend Orford Music Academy this year to study with Laurence Lesser. He has performed at venues such as Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, Kennedy Center, Peabody (Friedberg, Goodwin, Symington hall), Jordan Hall, Newton Cultural Center City Hall, and Tsai Performance Center. He is currently a junior at Concord Academy.
