Phillip Wang

At age 11, Phillip Wang won the 1997 "Jeanne Selander Memorial Concerto Competition," sponsored by the Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra. As the winner, he will perform Haydn's Piano Concerto in D with the orchestra at its Mid-Winter Concert on February 27, 1998.

Phillip is the son of Dr. and Mrs. C. N. Wang of Chelmsford, MA. He attends the McCarthy Middle School, where he skipped from fifth to seventh grade, still maintaining High Honors.

When he started his piano studies at the age of 5 with Doris Thomopoulos of Lowell, Phillip could not speak a word of English. His father had to translate back and forth between teacher and student during lessons.

Phillip faithfully practices two hours every day, and his interpretation of the classics would do credit to any adult professional. He also enjoys playing Ping Pong, chess, and computer games.
