Tonight's soloist, pianist Justin Chew, is the winner of LPO's 2006 Jeanne Selander Student Concerto Competition. A sixteen-year-old resident of Reading, Justin is an honor roll student at Phillips Academy in Andover, where he is in eleventh grade. He has been studying piano for nine years, the past three with Dr. Peter Warsaw of the Phillips Academy music department faculty.

Justin regularly performs at the school's student recitals and is a pianist in the school's Chamber Music Society. In addition to performing with the Reading Symphony Orchestra in its annual Children Concert in December, he also performed the Mendelssohn Piano Concerto in G minor with the Reading Symphony Orchestra on March 12, 2006. He regularly performs at Longwood Place retirement home and at the Reading Senior Center.

In addition to piano, Justin has also studied violin for four years, the past three with Judith Lee, also a music faculty member at Phillips Academy. He is a violinist in his school's Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra.

Justin also participates in several other extracurricular activities at school. He is currently co-president of his school's Science Team, and this year he led the team in the National Science Bowl competition. He is also on the school's indoor varsity track team and a member of the school's Ping-pong and Badminton Clubs. He was a finalist in the 2005 National Chemistry Olympiad, and this year, he was a semi-finalist in the 2006 National Physics Olympiad.
