Daniel Chen, 17, began studying the violin at the age of six with Dr. Young-Sook Han. He recently won 1st place in the LPO’s 2005 Youth Concerto Competition and performed Ravel’s Tzigane with the orchestra in 2005. Daniel also won 1st place in the Wagner College Young Musicians Competition in 2004 and subsequently performed solo in concert at the college. Daniel recently performed in a Master Class with David Kim, concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra.
From 1998–2003, he was a member of the Young Symphonic Ensemble of the Children’s Orchestra Society and had most recently served as assistant concertmaster. He was also in the chamber music program there, performing in numerous recitals. He appeared as soloist with the orchestra in a performance of Bach’s Double Concerto for two violins and also performed a concert series at Merkin Hall as a member of the Alumni Orchestra. Daniel is currently concertmaster of the InterSchool Orchestra (ISO) Symphony of New York under the direction of Jonathan Strasser. He was concertmaster of the ISO Symphony in Spain as guest of the Orquestra de Alkalá in 2004 and was also a finalist in the ISO Concerto Competition in 2003 and 2004. In February of 2005, Daniel led a string quartet as first violinist at a New York courthouse rededication where Governor Pataki and Mayor Bloomberg spoke. During the summer of 2003 Daniel attended the Meadowmount School of Music under the tutelage of Sally Thomas. Last summer he attended the Harvard University Summer Program taking courses in Law and Psychology, and Microeconomics. He also served as concert-master of the Harvard Summer School Orchestra under the direction of Judith Zuckerman, and studied violin privately with Lynn Chang of The Boston Conservatory, Boston University, and MIT. Daniel is currently a junior at Regis High School in Manhattan, where he plays violin in the Regis Jazz Band, the Classical Musical Society, and the Contemporary Music Society. He continues his violin studies with Sally Thomas of The Juilliard School and Min Sun Kim, String Department Chair of the Garden State Academy of Music, and is on faculty at the Third Street Music School Settlement.
