Charles Yip, age 18, started his life as a violinist at age 5 ˝, soon after he first heard the Vivaldi’s A minor Violin Concerto on the radio. He currently studies with Fudeko Takahashi, and has also studied with Susan Turcotte-Gabriel, Julie Otteson, and Alison Bailey.

Since September 2006, Charles Yip has worked with Susan Turcotte-Gabriel in The UMASS Lowell String Project in an attempt to bring the joy of music to the Lowell middle and high schools. More recently, Charles has worked with young composers Kevin Lau and Jack Phillips in The Yue Project, whose aim was to spread modern music to the community.

Charles highly values spreading new music to others. At the New England Conservatory, he works with composer Rodney Lister to help spread music of aspiring composers.

Charles is a member of both the Nashoba Youth Orchestra and the New England Conservatory Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, which went on tour to China in the summer of 2007. In the spring of 2007, Charles played the first movement of the Barber Violin Concerto with the Nashoba Youth Orchestra.

Charles goes to Westford Academy where he is a senior. In addition to music, his favorite subjects are math and physics. At college, he plans to major in both music and applied mathematics.
