2012 Concerto Competition Winner, Anna DeLoi
Performing the Gliere Concerto for Harp & Orchestra on May 4, 2012
Sixteen year old Anna DeLoi, of Plaistow, NH, began studying the harp at age nine with Stephanie Curcio. After playing for only two years, she was invited by Benjamin Zander to play with the New England Conservatory’s (NEC) Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. She is now principal harpist in that orchestra. She has also served as principal harpist in the Greater Boston Youth Symphony under Federica Cortese, and in the New Hampshire Philharmonic. As a student at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, Anna studies harp with Franziska Huhn. She also takes classes in music theory and composition. She has performed in masterclasses given by Marie-Pierre Langlamet of the Berlin Philharmonic and with Ann Hobson Pilot, retired harpist of the BSO.
Anna made her solo debut at the age of 10, with the Timberlane Chamber Orchestra. She was later invited to perform as a soloist with the Merrimack Valley Philharmonic Orchestra. Last spring, she won the New Hampshire Philharmonic’s concerto competition and appeared as a featured soloist in March.
In 2008, NEC recommended that Anna audition for RDF television’s documentary featuring prodigy Alex Prior and exceptionally gifted young musicians. Anna was one of only five musicians chosen from the U.S. to participate in the filming of this program that aired in the United Kingdom in spring 2009 and in the U.S. the following fall.
In May of 2010 Anna was a featured soloist on National Public Radio’s “From the Top”. In February of 2012, she appeared again on “From the Top”, this time as part of a harp and violin duo with friend and fellow NEC student Nash Ryder.
This past year, Anna participated in From the Top’s Center for the Development of Arts Leaders – a program that pairs high school musicians with community partner-sites for intensive year-long outreach projects. In this program, Anna and her site partner, Nash, assumed the responsibility of planning and implementing a series of music education classes for two classrooms of nearly 50 kindergarten students at the Chittick School in Mattapan MA. Anna and Nash also gave benefit concerts to raise money for the program. Anna has developed a new passion for music through her work with children – although her year-long program has ended, she continues to teach at the Chittick. It is her hope to continue to pursue music in unique and transformative settings.
