The Jeanne Selander Memorial Concerto Competition

Each year, the Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra sponsors the Jeanne Selander Memorial Concerto Competition, a competition for young musicians, for which the prize is to play a solo with the orchestra at one of its regular concerts.

The LPO is pleased to announce the winners of its 2009 Concerto Competition, chosen from a very competitive field of 25 auditioners.

      Jennifer Chew performed the first movement of Schumann's Piano Concerto
            at our Pops concert on May 8, 2009
Runner-up:
      Miki Nagahara performed the first movement of Barber Violin Concerto No.1
            at our Pops concert on May 8, 2009

Application

The contest is open to young musicians up through the age of 18 who live or go to school within 75 miles of Lowell. (Students may still enter if they are over 18 but still enrolled in high school.) Please visit this page in the fall for rules and applications for 2010.
Students who meet the application criteria will be permitted to audition and will be assigned an audition time. If you have any questions about the competition, or if you wish to receive an application by mail, contact .

Audition

At the auditions, musicians will be expected to be prompt for their assigned times. Accompanists are NOT allowed. The auditioners are required to provide the auditioning board with either the piano accompaniment or an orchestral score for their solo. While it is called a Concerto Competition, any major work for solo instrument(s) and orchestra is allowed, such as Lalo's Symphonie Espagnol, or Bruch's Scottish Fantasy.

Auditions are CLOSED to the public.
